The final approach

by Sam on March 14, 2010

Please follow Twitter for the latest updates following Katie’s arrival into Georgetown (official arrival time 1607GMT). Katie is currently having a well-earned rest, but rest assured we will continue updating the blog and add photos when we get our hands on them. If anyone has any footage or photographs from Katie’s arrival, please email them to sam@pedallingalltheway.com.

Finally, thanks to everyone who helped out with Katie’s arrival into Guyana and provided her with a fantastic welcome, and to all of you following her progress throughout today and the last few months. Special thanks also to @demwaves, who provided most of the live photos throughout the day.

1620GMT — SHE’S FINISHED!!! Thanks to your fantastic donations and smashing the last $60,000 fundraising target, we’ve had to set one more new one! The new goal of $84,510 works out as $30 (i.e. clean drinking water for life for one person) for every one of the 2,817 miles from Dakar, Senegal to Georgetown, Guyana, the route that Katie has just rowed. Click here to donate.

CONGRATS Katie!!

I am so happy, relieved, and terribly excited for you!! I cannot imagine all that is happening to you emotionally, physically and spiritually. But know that I have become a HUGE fan of yours. You are my (s)hero!

This morning I drove to the office hearing the radio news reporting that “Katie Spotz, a Warren Wilson College graduate, has completed….” I thought ‘I know her!’. A swell of warmth filled my heart knowing you are safe. A deep breath filled my lungs and I began trying to picture what kind of greeting you received, the fresh fruit you so craved and the hope that someone got you that grassy drink you mentioned so often. So many people here, that you may never meet, have been touched by what you have accomplished. Bloggers of western NC have posted many reports on you… keeping others up to date on where and what Katie Spotz is doing.

You did it. You succeeded. You have changed lives. You will continue to change lives, by this one act of kindness. It was difficult – clearly. But, it was worth every moment. Thank you. Thank you for being such a selfless person. Thank you for showing that one person can make a difference.

Congratulations!

Would love to see a photo album of some kind.
Pictures of your trip are hard to track down on here!

Hi Katie!
Congratulations!
You have done a great, actually a world-class physical and psychological performance, also regarding preparation.
You have not complained much about the weather and other things you can’t influence. This is how one can do such performances, keep a positive attitude. It is inspiring to see what is possible!

If you compare with the Atlantic Rowing Race, they have done 2250 nm. The fastest solo man did it in 52 days. All other solo rowers and most pairs are still out there after 70 days. You have done 2817 nm in 70 days, a simply great performance!

Congratulations again!

Wow! Katie you are one amazing women! You’ve taught me, if not everyone who has read your blogs, that if you put your mind to it you can achieve it! You honestly are one of the most AMAZING people I have ever heard about! Good for you and YAY for making it to land! :) I hope you enjoyed your journey and hope that you enjoy all the food that you loved to eat before you were at sea for, what probably seemed like an eternity. I hope to be half that women you are one day…Congrats!
