Final countdown

by Katie on December 18, 2009

Hours away from boarding the plane to Dakar, Senegal and I cannot express how excited I am to finally start my journey. I have devoted nearly two years of planning and preparing and soon enough, I will be in Africa.

Once I arrive in Dakar, I will be hosted by members of the Dakar Rotary Club through a connection from the Rotary Club of Chagrin Valley. The boat is expected to arrive by freighter on Christmas Day, and I can expect to be on water sometime near New Year’s Day.

Until then, my priority will be to make sure everything with shipping moves smoothly and to keep a close eye on the weather with support from my weatherguy. Although my family will not be in Dakar, my friend Sam Williams will be joining me who has rowed solo across the Atlantic in 2008 and cycled from London to Kenya earlier this year. I could not have asked for a better friend to support me in my final days on land.

I heard about your journey on news radio yeasterday and i want you to know that everyday of your journey I am going to pray that Christ makes all your waters as clear as glass. May this be a journey of peace and safety. I ask the Blessed Mother of Creation to pray over you and protect you. Good luck! I pray as a mother myself that I give my children the freedom to follow their dreams.
